Our Week in Review

Engaging MPs to Champion Preventative Food Support

Vic met with three MPs this week – Jonathan Brash (Hartlepool), Liz Twist (Blaydon and Consett) and Jonathan Reynolds (Stalybridge and Hyde) – to discuss The Bread and Butter Thing’s work tackling food insecurity in their constituencies.

Across the three areas, we currently run 11 hubs supporting more than 7,800 active members. Discussions focused on the impact of our affordable food model, our plans to expand in some areas, and the role food clubs can play in supporting communities before they reach crisis point.

These meetings are an important part of building relationships with MPs and raising awareness of how preventative, community-based solutions like ours can support households while reducing reliance on emergency food provision.

DEFRA Visit Highlights Shared Commitment to Sustainable Food

We had a visit from our partners DEFRA - Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs - who is responsible for improving and protecting the environment, and growing a green economy.

They wanted to explore our new warehouse and of course, go out to our hub in Hulme, so that’s what we did!

One of DEFRA’s main missions is to make food more sustainable, and that’s why we make great partners.

BBC Visits Old Leake Hub

And finally, our hub in Old Leake welcomed a BBC camera into their regular weekly community gathering. Members shared honest stories that highlighted the importance of supporting people early and preventing hardship long before it reaches crisis point. You can read the BBC article here.
