Charity Information
The Bread and Butter Thing is a Manchester-based, UK-registered Charity with No. 1169383.
At a time of sustained cost-of-living pressure, TBBT delivers a proven, scalable approach to reducing food insecurity helping households stay financially stable while easing pressure on public services. By connecting surplus food supply with communities through a direct-to-household model, we provide immediate, practical support that works in the real world, week after week.
Over the last decade, TBBT has grown from a simple local idea into the UK’s largest B2C member-based food charity. What began as a response to food waste and household need has become a form of prevention infrastructure supporting families before financial pressure turns into crisis.

Governance
The Bread and Butter Thing has a clear and active governance structure, shaped by the skills, experience and judgement of our Trustee Board. Trustees bring expertise from across charity leadership, finance, risk, operations, people, safeguarding, commercial partnerships and community impact, helping to test decisions and keep the organisation focused on its purpose.
Governance at TBBT is practical and disciplined. Charity Commission reporting is up to date, performance and finance are reviewed regularly, and risk, compliance, data protection, food safety and health and safety are actively overseen. This gives the organisation the right level of scrutiny, challenge and support as we grow, while keeping decisions rooted in our values and in the needs of the communities we serve.

All the work done by The Bread and Butter Thing is made possible by our supporters.
