James’s story
“There are months when I’ve eaten nothing but beans so my little boy could eat properly.”
James is a support worker from Crewe who has spent more than nine years caring for adults with autism and learning disabilities. He works full time, but rising costs have turned life into a constant financial juggle.
His bills have risen by more than 60 percent, and his food budget has dropped to just £140 a month, which works out at £1.55 per person per day. Even essentials like petrol now compete with feeding his child.
“Let’s go for a nice meal together as a family. It’s forty quid. It’s either that or prioritising eating for the next two weeks.”
When his car broke down, he had to ask his parents for help, something that felt like a setback. “You want to stand on your own two feet.”
The Bread and Butter Thing helps James keep food on the table at a time when working no longer shields families from tough times.
Your support can help someone like James get through the month.
