SERVING UP CHANGE: SECOND LIVERPOOL FOOD HUB OPENING WITH COMIC RELIEF BACKING

We are excited to be opening our second food club in Liverpool next month. The ‘Kirkdale’ hub will sit in addition to the success of ‘Hillside High’ which launched in September 2024.

Hillside High member Cat and her son Carter

With the backing of Comic Relief, the joy of bringing fresh, healthy, affordable food to the table for even more people in Liverpool is tangible!

Nicholas, foster dad to 3 and dad to 1 says, “the kids absolutely love the surprise of what they will find in their food bags and are so excited to cook new recipes.” Sadly, this hasn’t always been the case for them he says, “they were eating really unhealthy takeaway meals every night prior to us caring for them.” And Nicholas isn’t alone in this because 82% of our members say that they have tried new foods since joining Bread and Butter and 71% eat more home cooked meals.

The new hub can be found at

·       Kirkdale St Lawrence CE Primary School, Fonthill Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool L4 1QD – 12.05.25

Hillside High has 304 registered members, members like Cat, who are the reason why Comic Relief are backing us.

Not Lazy. Not Failing. Just human

Cat, 27, is a devoted mum to her four-year-old son Carter. Her journey hasn’t been an easy one. While studying dance and drama at university, Cat suffered a brain injury. At the time, she believed she had just pulled a muscle during one of her dance classes but as she started to lose feeling in her legs, she discovered she had a blocked airway and would have to be referred for life threatening surgery to try and remove the septic liquid pushing on her brain. “They call me Cat for a reason, that’s one of my nine lives gone.” The recovery was tough, but she’s tougher, now balancing life with ADHD, raising a little boy and somehow managing three different jobs as a Disney princess, children’s scientist and photo booth entrepreneur.

Cat is redefining her future and building on her own childhood experiences. She is a resilient role model to son Carter, leading the way with her devotion to her community. She is creating her own narrative, normalising food clubs and showing her son how important and integral they are to help families and communities. It's a family affair, with mum Debbie, 52, volunteering at Hillside high a long side her daughter. Cat says her mum has fibromyalgia but pushes herself to help at Bread and Butter every week which inspires her with her positive ‘can do’ attitude which Carter is already learning, “He wants to be a police man when he grows up, he says it’s because he wants to help people like mum does.” For Cat, the food club has become more than a place to get essentials. It’s a community. But more importantly, volunteering at the food hub has given her something she deeply values: purpose. “It’s not just about food. It’s the chats, the laughs, the people. It reminds me I’m not alone.” Through all the ups and downs, Cat continues to show what strength, kindness, and community look like in action and she’s raising a little boy who’s learning to do the same.
