James shares his Bread and Butter Thing story in new Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief vodcast

A new series celebrating the joy of food & the people behind it
Food does more than feed us. It connects us to family, to memories, and to our communities. But for millions of people across the UK, that connection is under threat as rising costs and food insecurity make good food harder to reach.
That’s the message at the heart of A Recipe For… a new vodcast series from Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief, created to celebrate the joy of food and shine a light on what’s lost without it.
Hosted by Si King, one half of The Hairy Bikers, the vodcast brings together well-known guests and people on the front line of tackling food poverty to share stories, recipes, and the memories that make food meaningful.
James’s story: from food poverty to finding support
In the first episode, James, a father and support worker (who has spoken on our own podcast) reflects on the powerful role food has played in his life.
He shares memories of cooking with his son, the challenges of losing access to good food, and the support he found through our food clubs.
James’s local hub is one of hundreds supported through the Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief partnership, which helps The Bread and Butter Thing reach more people in need by redistributing surplus food and reducing waste.
Through this support, thousands of families like James’s are able to stretch their budgets, eat better, and feel part of a caring community.
Why stories like James’s matter
At The Bread and Butter Thing, we know food is about more than what’s in the bag. It’s about connection, the chats at the hubs, the recipes swapped between neighbours, the sense of belonging that comes from sharing.
When people like James share their stories, they help others understand the reality of food poverty and inspire more people to get involved in building stronger, fairer communities.
If you’re a Bread and Butter Thing member and would like to share your story, we’d love to hear from you. By speaking up, you can help raise awareness, challenge stigma and inspire change across the UK.
