Why We Do Our Podcast: Celebrating Everyday Heroes

Mark Game interviewing member, Emma Vinton for A Slice of Bread and Butter.

A Podcast with a Purpose

When we launched our A Slice of Bread and Butter podcast, the goal wasn’t fame, downloads, or slick production values (although we’re pretty chuffed with how it turned out thanks to Tamsyn Kent). It was much simpler and much more important. We wanted to create a space where the voices that are so often overlooked could finally be heard.

We meet individuals and families who juggle impossible choices: work, caring responsibilities, long-term health issues, low incomes, rising costs. They’re navigating all of this quietly, while still holding things together as best they can. Their lives don’t fit neatly into headlines, but they deserve attention all the same.

Now, with our British Podcast Awards Silver award win, it’s wonderful to see that commitment recognised, not as a personal achievement, but as a sign of the value of listening to everyday voices.

Beyond Case Studies: Real Voices, Real Impact

The podcast is a way of making sure their voices are in the conversation. Not framed as case studies or soundbites, but as real people with opinions, humour, ideas, and things to say about the world around them. We talk about resilience, yes—but also about frustration, small wins, ambition, and the day-to-day business of just keeping going.

We also wanted to show the complexity. Food insecurity, poverty, mental health none of it exists in a vacuum. And the people affected aren’t just “recipients of support.” They’re volunteers, parents, workers, neighbours. They're not passive they’re constantly adapting, managing, and contributing.

That’s why our British Podcast Awards Silver award win matters. It’s not really about The Bread and Butter Thing it’s about acknowledging the value of listening to people properly. And if this podcast has helped do that, even in a small way, then it’s been worth it.

We’re pleased to see the podcast recognised in the Impact category but more importantly, we’re glad that the attention is landing where it should: with the people who’ve shared their stories. They’re the reason we do this. If this win helps more people hear those voices, that’s the real achievement.
