Cranswick

Cranswick is a new supplier for 2021. With local sites based in Hull and Barnsley, Cranswick produces high-quality meat products from sausages and bacon to chicken and gourmet pastries. With an embedded strategy for sustainable food production, the team have worked innovatively to explore new ways of redistributing its edible surplus.

Cranswick has been instrumental in ensuring TBBT members are accessing quality protein options, supplying TBBT with a whole variety of fresh and frozen pork and chicken products as well as surplus ingredients such as chopped veg.

The collaboration quickly developed into a dynamic and innovative partnership. In the summer, TBBT paid a visit to the Cranswick Gourmet Pastry site to meet with the technical and operations teams and explore surpluses that TBBT could put to good use. A walkthrough the factory uncovered items that weren’t yet being redistributed – such as ‘overbakes’: pastry and pie products which are either slightly too browned to go to supermarkets, which have seeped with juices overflowing, or had some cracking in the pastry. But they’re all still delicious and edible – the pastry equivalent of wonky veg! As a result, TBBT members are now benefitting from a range of sausage rolls and luxury meat pies.

Cranswick has sustainability baked into their business, enabling their team to be fast and agile when surpluses occur: from the factory walkaround on the Friday, pastries started arriving on the Monday.

Food Coordinator, Justin Pritchard smiles: “Their pastry is quite something. It has something extraordinary like 2741 layers on a sausage roll. It’s properly flaky and delicious.”

We choose to work with TBBT as a key redistribution partner for our edible surplus because it’s team is flexible, responsive and innovative in the way they approach surplus and they are able to take all kinds of product from ingredients through to finished goods. Cranswick has ambitious sustainability plans to have zero edible food waste by 2030 and TBBT are helping us to deliver that whilst ensuring our surplus helps support families who need it.
